According to a study published in the journal Radiology, AI significantly improved the detection of lung nodules on chest X-rays. Chest X-rays are one of the often-used screening techniques for locating lung nodules. Particularly when radiologists are dealing with a high volume of cases, AI can be a helpful tool to aid in the identification of lung nodules.
In the study, researchers recruited 10,476 individuals with an average age of 59 years who received chest X-rays at a health screening facility between June 2020 and December 2021 in order to determine the actual impact that AI has in clinical practice. Patients filled out a self-reported health questionnaire to provide baseline information on things like age, sex, smoking status, and previous lung cancer cases.
The findings of the study showed that 2% of the patients had lung nodules. Using AI to detect actionable lung nodules on chest X-rays increased the detection rate from 0.25 to 0.59%, according to the study. Age and a history of lung cancer or tuberculosis were linked to positive reports, but these and other health factors had no effect on the AI systems effectiveness.
